We will all pay the price for Trump and Republican’s cuts to Medicaid

Rather than finding a way for the wealthy to pay their fair share, Trump is planning more tax cuts for the wealthy and making his current tax cuts permanent.

Trump and Republicans are also looking at significant cuts to programs that provide insurance. Now that Republicans hold the House, the Senate and the White House, their insurance cuts are all but assured.

One of the insurance programs they’re looking to cut is Medicaid.

Significant cuts to Medicaid are expected, with the House Republican Study Committee’s (RSC) budget plan, the Republican House Budget Committee’s (HBC) budget resolution, and the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 all calling for Trump to make huge cuts to this healthcare program.

Medicaid is the nation’s public health insurance coverage for low-income people. It provides coverage for families and children, pregnant people, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

40 million of the 88 million people on Medicaid are children. 8 in 10 children living in poverty get their insurance coverage through Medicaid.

Over 1.2 million Wisconsinites get their health insurance through Medicaid. In Wisconsin, Medicaid covers 1 in 7 adults; 1 in 3 children; 4 in 7 nursing home residents; 1 in 6 Medicare beneficiaries; and 1 in 3 people with disabilities.

Medicaid insurance covers 41% of all births in the United States.

23% of adults with mental illness get their health insurance coverage through Medicaid.

It provides coverage to 5 out of 8 nursing home residents.

1 in 5 Americans are on Medicaid.

Medicaid also pays Medicare premiums and often provides wrap around coverage for services not covered by Medicare-such as long-term care coverage.

Medicaid helps the government respond in economic downturns and other emergencies, providing insurance coverage to people who suddenly lose their jobs.

Medicaid provides significant financing for hospitals, community health centers, physicians, nursing homes, and community-based long-term services and supports. Cuts to Medicaid coverage will mean more uninsured costs, meaning everyone will pay more. Hospitals, community health centers and nursing homes will likely close.

Cuts to Medicaid would mean millions of people, the majority children, would lose their health insurance. Hospitals, clinics and nursing homes will likely close. Our communities will be less healthy and people will die.

We will all pay the price for Republicans cuts to Medicaid.
